March's Christmas card

I had the day off work today (the first of a long stretch - yippee!), and I was hoping to get some stamping done. I couldn't seem to stay very focused, but I did manage to make my March Christmas cards.

First off, I apologize for the poor photographs. I was hurrying to finish the cards and take the pictures before dinner, so I didn't have the best setup or lighting.

Back to the cards. I used the Quick Critters Winter stamp and die combo for this group of cards. The set has three different critters -- a snowman, a moose and a penguin -- as well as several different sentiments. I made two cards with each critter using the same basic layout.

I really like these critters stamp and die combos (I have another set as well). The dies cut out the animal shapes, and then you just stamp the faces. Quick, easy and definitely cute! For these cards I made the critters a little scene with snowy hills and green trees, and I gave them each a scarf made with red and white twine.

For the card bases, I used a splatter stamp from the Gorgeous Grunge set to make a subtle, snowy-looking background. Three red sequins add a little pop of color.

So far I'm three for three with making Christmas cards each month. I have to admit I'm a little surprised, but definitely pleased. At this rate they'll be done by October! Thanks for stopping by!

One in a Minion

Months ago one of my cousins asked me if I would make him a Minion card like the Yoda one I made him for his birthday a few years ago. Of course I told him I would, and I had every intention of making the card and mailing it to him as a "just because" surprise. I even did a Google search for different Minion punch-art images.

But, as so often happens, life got in the way and I never had a chance to sit down and make the card. I left those search results open on my iPad, though, and I finally managed to make him a Minion card for his tenth birthday. Yay!

I have to say that I think he turned out pretty cute! And instead of putting my Minion on a "flat" card, I made him into an easel card (with a non-birthday outer sentiment) so my cousin could display it in his room if he wants to.

Here are some tips and measurements for my Minion:

Body - I started with a 3" x 6" piece of Daffodil Delight card stock and traced a circle Framelits die to make his head and an oval die to make his bottom. Here is a picture of the minion on my grid paper so you can get an idea of the size.

Hair - I hand-cut the little tuft of hair.

Eyes - I used the small circle from the Itty Bitty Shapes punch pack with Basic Black card stock, the 1/2" circle punch with Chocolate Chip card stock, and the 1" circle punch with Whisper White card stock. I added highlights with a white gel pen.

Goggles - Silver paper punched with the 1-1/4" circle punch and a 1/4" wide strip of Basic Black card stock for the band.

Smile - I punched a piece of Basic Black card stock with the 1-1/4" circle punch, shifted the punch slightly, and punched again.

Arms and hands - I used 1/4" wide strips of Daffodil Delight card stock for the arms. For the hands I punched two Basic Black daisy flowers and then trimmed off some of the petals (see photo). I added teeny pieces of black card stock as the cuffs.

Clothes - I traced the Minion shape onto scratch paper and then sketched a general shape for the overalls. Once I was happy with the shape, I traced it onto Marina Mist card stock that I stamped with the Just Jeans background stamp and cut it out. The straps are 1/4" wide strips of Marina Mist, attached with mini black brads. I used a white gel pen to add stitching details. The legs and shoes are cut out by hand.

Here is a picture with the card completely closed. I wanted a neutral card base that didn't detract from the Minion, so I used Crumb Cake card stock. The plain card stock was a bit too boring, though, so I decided to emboss it with the Softly Falling embossing folder because it reminded me of falling confetti.

I scored the card front about 2 " from the bottom (unfortunately I didn't write down the exact measurement). Then I adhered just the bottom part of the Minion to the portion of the card front below the fold.

The card base is a standard A2 size (4-1/4" x 5-1/2"), but obviously the Minion extends past the edges of the card. Luckily I found an old store-bought envelope in my stash that was big enough to fit the finished card.

Finally, here is a picture of the inside of the card. To make the easel part, I spelled out the sentiment "You're one in a Minion" with the Labeler Alphabet stamp set using black and Marina Mist ink on Whisper White card stock. I trimmed out the words and adhered them to a piece of Basic Black card stock. Then I used Dimensionals to attach the panel along the bottom of the inside of the card.

For the upper panel, I cut a piece of Whisper White card stock and stamped it with a birthday sentiment. (The full sentiment is "It's time to celebrate with cake," but I just omitted the last couple of words to better fit my card.) I wanted to add a bit of yellow inside the card, so I colored in the first few words with my Daffodil delight marker.

And that's it! It really wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be when I started. And it's fun to make something a little different sometimes. So thanks for stopping by -- and remember that you're one in a Minion!

Starry masculine birthday card

It's been a stressful week at work, so I haven't felt much like stamping or blogging or doing much else except lying on the couch, watching TV and playing on my iPad. But I decided that I should pull together one blog post for the week, so here it is!

Truthfully, I'm not completely happy with the way this card turned out. I had these different elements that I rearranged quite a few times, but I never really felt like anything "worked." I probably should have just started over, but I kept going and eventually settled on this layout.

While I'm not crazy about the layout, I do like certain elements, such as the combination of wood (DSP and star element) and metal (silver foil and staples) and how I turned the stitched square so it looks like a diamond (certainly not a unique idea, but I don't often remember to do things like that).

I had to add a little sparkle to the front of the card, so I painted Wink of Stella glitter on the two long banner pieces and on the tiny stars. I know this is a masculine card, but the Wink of Stella is pretty subtle; it just adds a little shine when it catches the light.

I don't often decorate the insides of cards, but this one seemed to need it. I carried over some of the elements from the front of the card by adding a strip of the woodgrain DSP along the bottom and scattering a few tiny punched stars around the sentiment.

Balloon-shaped card

A few weeks ago I was making a bunch of birthday cards to give to my uncle. I wanted to do something a little different, so I pulled out my set of Balloons dies from Simon Says Stamp and made a fun balloon-shaped card.

All in all, this is a pretty simple card. I used the Foil Frenzy Specialty DSP for the balloon and silver foil to die cut the birthday sentiment. Then I added a few more silver accents with sequins and a bow around the bottom of the balloon. What make this card stand out is its shape.

The first step in making a shaped card is to find a good shape. The ones that work best are more "open" and don't have too much detail around the edges, such as circles, hearts, balloons and basic flowers.

Once you choose your shape, there are a couple of different options for making the card:

1. Fold a piece of card stock in half to create the card size you want. (If you want to make a card that will fit in an A2 envelope, start with that size card base and use a die that will fit on the card.) Decide whether you want the fold to be on the top or side of the card. Place the die so it hangs just over the fold and die cut your shape. Now you have a shaped card base that will open and close because you left some of the fold intact, although the shape will be flat along the fold. Finish your card as desired. Note: I don't have a problem die cutting through two layers of card stock with a thin die. If your die-cutting machine is very "tight" or the card stock is very thick, you may need to experiment with the "sandwich" you use to die cut.
2. Create a card base using the process described above. Die cut the shape a second time from the card stock or DSP you want on the front of your card (use a single piece for this one). Glue the second shape onto the shaped card base. Now your card front has the complete shape without any flat spots, and the card still opens and closes. In the photo below you can see the Foil Frenzy DSP balloon sticking up just past the white card base. Finish your card as desired.

Here is the inside of my card with a simple stamped sentiment. You can see the flat portion along the top of the balloon. If I hadn't added the Foil Frenzy balloon shape, the front of my card also would have looked like this. But honestly, I think that's fine, too. I've made cards like that before, and the fold in the shape doesn't really bother me; it just wasn't what I wanted for this card.

One benefit of adding the extra layer to a shaped card is that the front of your card can feature a lightweight paper, such as DSP or handmade paper, that wouldn't be sturdy enough for the card base. It also helps you to conserve your "fancy" papers by using a basic card stock for the card base.

Streamers to celebrate

I make a lot of birthday cards, both for myself and to give as sets to family members, so I'm always looking for new birthday-themed stamps and embellishments. The Skinny Mini Party Borders dies from Taylored Expressions fit that bill perfectly.

I love that these dies have four different streamer shapes, and they're the perfect size to fit across an A2-sized card.

For this card I went with a bold, bright color scheme. I cut all of the streamers out of Real Red, Pumpkin Pie, Bermuda Bay and Lemon Lime Twist card stock and glued two of each color on the front of a Daffodil Delight card base.

I stamped and colored the Packed for Birthday image and then cut it out with the Stitched Shapes Framelits dies. (Tip: You can use a square die to cut a rectangle. Align the die on one side of your image and run it through your die-cutting machine. Then reposition the die along the opposite side of the image and run it through your die-cutting machine just enough to trim that side. The faux stitching may overlap a bit, but it shouldn't be too noticeable.) I layered the image on black card stock and adhered it to the card base with Dimesionals.

The bright colors needed a little sparkle, so I used a Stardust Gelly Roll pen to color some of the details in the stamped image.

Inside the card I added a layer of white card stock stamped with the sentiment. I glued two streamers above the greeting to carry over the theme from the card front.

I used ten of the sixteen die-cut streamers on this card, so while I was at it I used the remaining six streamers to create another card:

For the focal point on this card, I used markers to apply ink directly to the rubber stamp, which allowed me to create a multi-colored image. I punched out the image with the Everyday Label punch and added a silver nailhead sticker to the tab on either side. Then I cut a small silver doily in half and glued the two pieces behind the top and bottom edges of the punched shape.

I used Dimensionals to adhere the focal piece to a white card base embellished with the six die-cut streamers. Three silver sequins finish off the card.
