Little holiday treat packages

For the last several years I've put together little treat packages for our mail carrier and UPS, FedEx, and Amazon delivery drivers. They're nothing extravagant or fancy, but just little treats to say thank you to the men and women who deliver our mail and packages all year long, especially during the cold winter.

For this year's treats, I started with a package of silver mini gable boxes that I found on the Stampin' Up! clearance rack. I knew I was going to be short on time during the holidays, so these were a great time saver for me. I did spruce them up a little bit with blue, silver and white die-cut snowflakes and a few rhinestones.

The size of the gable boxes meant that I had to find treats small enough to fit inside. I ended up with a holiday-flavored lip balm, a small hand lotion, a coffee gift card, and a handful of mints and Hershey's Kisses.

I also made a holiday card to accompany each gift box. I stuck with the snowflake theme and made them to coordinate with the boxes.

Supplies:
Paper: Pre-folded note cards and envelopes (Marco's Paper), Craft Perfect December Skies specialty card stock (Tonic Studios)
Accessories: Snowflake Confetti die (Taylored Expressions), Snowflake Set #1 dies (Echo park), rhinestones (Stampin' Up!), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute), silver mini gable boxes (Stampin' Up!)

The patterned paper was in a 6" x 6" pack. I cut a sheet into two 3" x 4-3/4" pieces to use as the large layers on the card fronts. Then I cut the leftover strip into two smaller strips to use at the bottom of the cards. To finish them off I added a variety of snowflakes and rhinestones.

Since the cards didn't fit inside the gable boxes, I put each filled box and a card (in an envelope) inside a cellophane bag. I folded over the top of the cellophane bags, stapled them closed and used a glue dot to adhere a bow over the staple. (I forgot to take a picture of this step, but I think you get the idea.)

If you still need inspiration for your holiday cards, next week I'll post a recap with links to all the Christmas cards I've made throughout the year. Then I'll be back to sharing non-holiday cards. I've made a lot of cards that I haven't posted on my blog yet; I'm going to do my best to share as many of them as possible before the end of the year so I can start 2020 with a clean slate. But I have a long to-do list for the next couple of weeks, so that may be an ambitious goal.

November Christmas cards: Caring Hearts Card Drive

Since I created an Instagram account earlier this year and started following the accounts of other cardmakers, I've been learning about many different card drives and card requests. One such drive is the Caring Hearts Card Drive, which collects handmade Christmas and holiday cards to be distributed to elderly people living alone or in nursing homes. I didn't have a lot of time to participate -- at that time the deadline was only a couple of weeks away -- but I dedicated some craft time to making thirty cards, focusing on using some of my patterned papers.

Below are pictures of the individual card designs. I've provided the supplies for each card and a helpful hint here and there, but I skipped step-by-step information because there are quite a few photos. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment, and I will respond as soon as I can.

Supplies:
Paper: Candlelight Christmas Specialty Designer Series Paper (DSP), thick Very Vanilla, Real Red card stock (Stampin' Up!); gingerbread cookie die-cut shapes, green Mirri Sparkle paper (The Paper Cut)
Ink: Signo white gel pen (Uni-ball)
Accessories: Perfect Pines dies, foil snowflakes, Toile Tidings glitter enamel dots, Home for Christmas enamel dots, red/pearl enamel dots (Stampin' Up!); Corner Chomper (We R Memory Keepers); foam tape (3M)

Supplies:
Stamps: Wonderful Year (Stampin' Up!)
Paper: Candlelight Christmas Specialty DSP, Very Vanilla card stock; thick Very Vanilla card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: Early Espresso (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Deco Labels dies, Toile Tidings glitter enamel dots (Stampin' Up!); classic holiday ribbon (Making Memories); foam tape (3M)

Supplies:
Paper: Toile Tidings DSP, Real Red card stock, Very Vanilla card stock, vellum card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Quilt Builder dies (Stampin' Up!), Large Stitched Rectangle Stackables dies (Lawn Fawn), jute twine (May Arts ribbon), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute), foam tape (3M)

I think this is my favorite layout of the bunch. I love the country Christmas feel. I die cut the frame out of vanilla card stock and glued it over the star shape, which I die cut out of red card stock. To help it stand out against the patterned paper, I glued the whole thing to vellum card stock and carefully trimmed around the square.

Supplies:
Paper: All Is Calm Specialty DSP, Soft Sky card stock, silver foil sheets (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: "Joy" die (Lawn Fawn); Bitty Banner punch, rhinestones, Pool Party shimmer ribbon (Stampin' Up!)

Supplies:
Stamps: More Merry Messages (Stampin' Up!)
Paper: All Is Calm Specialty DSP, Lost Lagoon card stock, Whisper White card stock, Pear Pizzazz card stock (Stampin' Up!); silver Mirri Sparkle paper (The Paper Cut)
Ink: Lost Lagoon (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Snowflake Set #1 dies (Echo Park); Big Peace Sugar Script die (Birch Press Design); Nested Banners dies (Simon Says Stamp); Perfect Pines dies, Pool Party shimmer ribbon, pearls, rhinestones, 1-3/8" square punch, sponge dauber, Dimensionals (Stampin' Up!); Pearl paint (Close to My Heart); Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

To help the tree stand out on the green card, I used a sponge dauber to apply pearl paint after I die cut the shape.

Supplies:
Paper: All Is Calm Specialty DSP, Whisper White card stock, thick Whisper White card stock, Lost Lagoon card stock, Smoky Slate card stock, Basic Gray card stock, Pear Pizzazz card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Country Houses dies, Country House Roofs and Background dies (Poppy Stamps); Large Stitched Rectangle Stackables dies (Lawn Fawn); Woodland Silhouettes 1 dies (Taylored Expressions); rhinestones (Stampin' Up!); foam tape (3M)

These cards helped me use up some paper scraps. I adhered strips of patterned paper to a piece of card stock and then die cut it with a stitched rectangle die. I adhered the panel to a white card base and then used different die cuts (in different colors) for the focal images.

Modern Holly in disguise

One of the things that I enjoy about crafting and cardmaking around the holidays is getting to play with all the stamps, dies, and papers that I don't use the rest of the year. But it's also fun to find non-holiday uses for some of those products to extend their life. That's what I did with the Modern Holly Layering stencils from Taylored Expressions.

Supplies (all supplies Taylored Expressions unless otherwise noted):
Stamps: Simple Strips Background
Paper: Pineapple, Peapod card stock; Whisper White, Basic Black card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: Pineapple, Peapod; VersaMark (Tsukineko)
Accessories: Modern Holly layering stencils, Mini Bloomers dies, "thanks" die, Simple Strips die, black enamel dots (Eyelet Outlet), white embossing powder (Hero Arts), blender brushes (Picket Fence Studios), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute), Dimensionals (Stampin' Up!)

The Modern Holly layering stencil set has three stencils. The first one makes the base of the holly leaves (yellow here), and the second makes the leaf details (green here). But when you use the stencils with non-holiday colors, the patterns makes a great background that can be used all year. The third stencil in the set makes the holly berries. I didn't use the berry stencil for this card, but I think it would have made a fun detail used with clear glitter embossing paste.

I layered the stenciled background panel on a black card base. For the sentiment I die cut the word "thanks" a few times from black card stock and then glued them on top of each other. This is a great technique for adding dimension to die-cut words without having to cut tiny pieces of foam tape to fit behind the narrow letters. I adhered the sentiment near the lower right corner of the card front and added a sentiment strip right below it.

For the final touch, I die cut three yellow flowers and added green die-cut details and black enamel dots for the flower centers. Using Dimensionals, I adhered the flowers around the sentiment.

I'm excited to tr this stencil again using multiple colors for the base layer of the leaves. Maybe a blend of soft pastels for a pretty spring card or reds and oranges for bold fall leaves. So many possibilities!

I can't adult today

When it comes to greeting cards -- and really just life in general -- I lean toward funny and sarcastic over "mushy" and sentimental. Of course, sentimental cards always have their place, but I love a card that makes me giggle. So when I saw the Blah Bunny stamp set from Honey Bee Stamps, I knew I had to have it. And I had so much fun making cards with it during my craft weekend last month.

Supplies:
Stamps: Blah Bunny (Honey Bee Stamps), To Seize or Not To Seize (Hero Arts)
Paper: Whisper White, thick Whisper White, Basic Black card stock (Stampin' Up!); Key Lime, Tranquil Teal card stock (Gina K Designs)
Ink: VersaFine Onyx Black, Memento Tuxedo Black (Tsukineko); colored pencils (Prismacolor)
Accessories: Blah Bunny dies (Honey Bee Stamps), Small Stitched Rectangle Stackables dies (Lawn Fawn), Stitched Frame Stacklets dies (Taylored Expressions), Wonky Stitched Circles dies (My Favorite Things), clear embossing powder (Stampamania), Mermaid Mix sequins (Pretty Pink Posh), Gamsol kit (Taylored Expressions), foam tape (3M), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

Oh, my goodness, these bunnies are too cute. And the To Seize or Not To Seize stamp set has the perfect sentiments for these images. I can definitely relate to them, at least on some days. How about you?

I used colored pencils to color the bunnies and accessories and then blended the coloring with Gamsol. Then it was just a matter of cutting out pieces, deciding on layouts, and adding the sentiments.

Supplies:
Stamps: Blah Bunny, Happy Birthday (Honey Bee Stamps); Tiny Words Birthday (Simon Says Stamp)
Paper: Whisper White, Basic Black card stock (Stampin' Up!); Coral Reef card stock (Gina K Designs)
Ink: VersaFine Onyx Black, Memento Tuxedo Black (Tsukineko); colored pencils (Prismacolor)
Accessories: Blah Bunny dies (Honey Bee Stamps), Banners dies (Stampin' Up!), Moonshine Confetti sequins (Hero Arts), clear embossing powder (Stampamania), Gamsol kit (Taylored Expressions), foam tape (3M), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

For the third card, I wanted to do something a little different, so I made a birthday card. This bunny is trying to psych himself up for a big party, but it looks like he's too pooped to pop. (Again, I can relate.) I love the little party hat, deflated balloons and sequins that look like falling confetti.

I found the perfect little sentiment in the Tiny Words Birthday stamp set. I stamped it on a white banner and added it to the left side of the card.
Inside the card I added a panel of white card stock stamped with a large birthday sentiment. I also added an extra party hat to the top of the letter B, which I think is the perfect finishing touch.

I hope these cards brought a little smile to your face. Do you like to make and give funny cards? Or do you prefer ones that are more elegant and serious?

Thanks for stopping by today! And if you're not up for any adulting, feel free to lie on the couch with a cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa.

Colors of autumn

We seem to be heading directly into winter in my neck of the woods, so I think I should share my autumn and Thanksgiving cards before it seems too late.

Supplies:
Stamps: Fall Tree #2 (Rubbernecker Stamps), Shiplap Background (Taylored Expressions), Mini Strips - Harvest (Taylored Expressions)
Paper: Whisper White, Crumb Cake card stock (Stampin' Up!); watercolor paper (Strathmore)
Ink: Chocolate Truffle amalgam ink, Wild Dandelion, Coral Reef, Key Lime, Grass Green, Tangerine Twist (Gina K Designs); embossing ink (Hero Arts)
Accessories: Large and Small Stitched Rectangle Stackables dies (Lawn Fawn), Mini Strips die (Taylored Expressions), sequins (Stampin' Up!), water mister (Ranger), white embossing powder (Hero Arts), foam tape (3M), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

I created these cards a couple of weeks ago during my annual craft weekend. At the time, many of our trees were still covered with vibrant orange, red, and yellow leaves. Sadly, now most of the leaves are on the ground covered by today's dusting of snow. But I love the way these cards turned out!

I wanted to create a watercolor look with these trees using regular dye-based ink pads, so my first step was to set up the watercolor paper and stamp in a stamp positioner. Using a small ink cube, I randomly applied the lightest color ink (yellow) on the stamp. I spritzed it with water and stamped it on the watercolor paper. Then I cleaned off the stamp, applied the next lightest color ink, spritzed it, and stamped. With the stamp positioner, the stamp and paper stay in place, so you just keep adding colors to the image. I continued following those steps until I had used all the desired colors, and then I set the panel aside to dry for a bit. Once it was dry I stamped the tree trunk and cut it out with a stitched rectangle die.

For the card base I used Crumb Cake card stock and stamped the Shiplap Background in dark brown ink. I adhered the watercolor panel to the card with foam tape and added a few orange and gold sequins. For the sentiments, I stamped the Mini Strips - Harvest stamp on Crumb Cake and embossed it with white embossing powder. I cut it out with the matching die, and then I had sentiments for a bunch of autumn cards!

Supplies:
Stamps: Bamboo Bucket (Rubbernecker Stamps), Mini Strips - Harvest (Taylored Expressions)
Paper: Crumb Cake card stock (Stampin' Up!), watercolor paper (Strathmore)
Ink: Chocolate Truffle amalgam ink, Wild Dandelion, Tangerine Twist (Gina K Designs); Sandstone, Cocoa, embossing ink (Hero Arts); Gray Granite (Stampin' Up!)
Accessories: Mini Strips die (Taylored Expressions), sequins (Stampin' Up!), foam tape (3M), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

For these cards, I followed the same basic process I described above. But once the panels were dry, I decided I really liked the placement of the image and the extra white space, so I didn't die cut them. I simply adhered the panels to Crumb Cake card bases and added a few sequins and sentiment strips.

Supplies:
Stamps: Fabulous Florals, Tiny Words (Simon Says Stamp)
Paper: Very Vanilla card stock (Stampin' Up!); Coral Reef, Plum Punch card stock (Gina K Designs)
Ink: Plum Punch, Coral Reef, Wild Dandelion, Grass Green, Sandy Beach (Gina K Designs); Sandstone (Hero Arts); Metallic Accents paint (Art Philosophy)
Accessories: Jute twine (May Arts Ribbon), Simple Strips die (Taylored Expressions), gold sequins (The Makery), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute), foam tape (3M)

For this batch of autumn cards I used an oldie-but-goodie technique. I filled an entire sheet of Very Vanilla card stock with stamped floral images and then cut the sheet down to four 4" x 5-1/4" pieces to use as card fronts. For my stamped images, I chose rich, fall-ish colors, using a different image for each color. When I use this technique I always start stamping with the largest image first and then work down to the smallest image, which you can tuck in all the little empty spaces. I also spattered the background with some gold metallic paint to add a little sparkle.

I created my own sentiment strips by running the Simple Strips die through my die-cutting machine with plain Very Vanilla card stock to get the strips with the flagged ends. Then I chose two words from the Tiny Words stamp, lined them up on a clear block and stamped them on the blank strips.

I attached each strip to a card with foam tape. For a simple finishing touch, I wrapped jute twine around the card front, tied it off in a bow and glued on three gold sequins.

Supplies:
Stamps: Floral Heart (Simon Says Stamp)
Paper: Coral Reef card stock (Gina K Designs), Whisper White card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: Coral Reef (Gina K Designs), Metallic Accents paint (Art Philosophy)
Accessories: Grateful die (Taylored Expressions), jute twine (May Arts Ribbon), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

I absolutely love this floral heart image, and I knew I was going to buy it as soon as I saw it. But when I made this card, I didn't want to spend a lot of time coloring all the little flowers. So instead I stamped it in one color of ink on the same color card base. Then to add a little glitz and some visual interest, I carefully added gold paint to just a few of the flowers and some little dots that were scattered around the image.

I wrapped jute twine around the bottom of the card front and tied it off in a little bow. I think this card would have been beautiful just like that, but I decided to add a gold die-cut word to work with the Thanksgiving theme. This would be a perfect layout for a set of cards; each card could be a different color and have a different word. (This stamp set also comes with a variety of sentiments, which would be perfect in place of the die-cut words.)

Thanks for stopping by!

Woodsy and wonderful

Earlier this fall I met up with a former coworker for lunch, and I wanted to bring him a set of cards. I needed images that were a little more masculine than the floral stamp sets I often reach for, so instead I went with the Snailed It stamp set from Ellen Hutson. I absolutely adore this stamp set. It has a variety of bold woodsy images and, although I didn't use them this time, a number of punny sentiments.

Supplies:
Stamps: Snailed It (Essentials by Ellen), Shiplap Background (Taylored Expressions), A Few Words (The Stamp Market)
Paper: Crumb Cake, Whisper White card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: Crumb Cake, Real Red, Mossy Meadow, Crushed Curry, Soft Suede, (Stampin' Up!); VersaMark (Tsukineko)
Accessories: Snailed It dies (Essentials by Ellen), white embossing powder (Hero Arts), Regals Candy Dots (Stampin' Up!), Dimensionals (Stampin' Up!)

I chose four images from the set -- a mushroom, tree stump, leafy branch, and simple flower -- and stamped and die cut each one four times. Then I simply played around with the layout until I had an arrangement I liked. I adhered the die-cut images to Crumb Cake card bases stamped with a shiplap background image and added the sentiments with white embossing powder.

I don't know that I would say these cards are definitely masculine, but they aren't overly feminine, either. I used bold colors, an "unfrilly" background image, and sentiments with a classic type-style font to keep the cards neutral. To add a little embellishment I used two dark green enamel circles in the upper right corner of each card.

I really liked how these cards turned out, so I decided to keep playing and make a few cards to use myself.

Supplies:
Stamps: Snailed It (Essentials by Ellen); Hardwood, Tree Rings (Stampin' Up!)
Paper: Crumb Cake, Soft Suede, Whisper White card stock (Stampin' Up!)
Ink: Crumb Cake, Soft Suede, Rich Razzleberry, Old Olive, Crushed Curry, Pumpkin Pie
Accessories: Snailed It dies (Essentials by Ellen), Happy Birthday die (Stampin' Up!), Scripty Hello die (Lawn Fawn), Brights and Regals Candy Dots (Stampin' Up!), linen thread (Stampin' Up!), white crochet thread (DMC), gold sequins (The Makery), All Year Cheer washi tape (Stampin' Up!), Corner Chomper (We R Memory Keepers), Dimensionals (Stampin' Up!), Art Glitter Glue (Art Institute)

To start these cards, I chose my color pallet and images, and then I stamped and die cut a bunch of the images. I sorted the die cuts into piles so I had a mix of colors and images for each card. I stamped two different wood-themed background images on Crumb Cake card bases, die cut sentiments and then assembled the cards. (Confession: That took longer than it sounds. I had a hard time deciding on some of the layouts.) I added a few simple embellishments, and there you have it!
